Psalm 86

BibleGateway.com Psalm 86

Does the Lord preserve our life because we are godly? Or does He act because we trust in Him?

The psalmist gives all glory to God for delivering his soul. So it is safe to interpret he does not mean God has shown him favor on his own merit or potential for godliness. Rather he gives thanks and cries out for grace from God. Knowing you can bring nothing to the table with God. You have nothing to offer. Not even the ability to know he is better than all things on your own. This humbles you and forces you to realize your place in relation to the one and only God. So whatever you thought you did to get saved, you didn't. All the work was done for you so that you could never boast.
